SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- Eversource customers, some of whom have have seen their bills triple despite using less electricity, are getting some relief, but it may not be enough to significantly ease the financial burden.

The utility company implemented a rate decrease that took effect January 1, 2026, following months of customer frustration over dramatically higher bills. One customer posted on Facebook recently posted, “48% less usage than last year but 3-4 times what my bill was last year. Heat on minimum 62 to heat my building to prevent freezing pipes.” Another customer questioned, “How about getting the bills right and our promised discount for overcharging on distribution fees?”

Eversource explained Thursday that a typical customer, who uses 600 kilowatt-hours per month, could see roughly a $5 decrease, which is approximately three percent on the delivery portion of their bill. The new decrease will be long-term and based on market conditions, the company said.

Eversource also said a supply adjustment will go into effect February 1, but that won’t impact most customers and is not something the company controls.
