Experts say you should file your tax returns sooner rather than later

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- The house voted to end the partial government shutdown that started Saturday, but now tax experts are warning to file your returns now to avoid possible delays.
“I usually get it done quick, just to get it out of the way,” Agawam’s Larry Gousse tells us, as he already filed his tax returns on Sunday. For many of us, we still face that chore.
Tax experts, like Ray Maagero of Liberty Tax in West Springfield, say tax season should still go smoothly since the IRS filing system is automated. However, Maagero has one main concern.
“If your return happens to get pulled for some reason, that might slow it down, besides the fact the shutdown, more important the IRS is a little shorthanded,” Maagero explains.
Now, when it comes to tax refunds, especially for those who rely on them, he says you should file now so you can get your refund faster.
Shutdown or no shutdown, he wants you to make sure your personal information is protected. He continues to say, “As long as you don’t have a return out there attached to your social security number, there’s a chance that some bad guys could file before you.”
Gousse says he got $1,000 more in tax refunds this year compared to last year, and despite the shutdown and the IRS being short-staffed, he is not fearful.
“I think it will be fine. I don’t really need the money that fast, so whenever it comes, it comes,” he tells us.
The deadline to file those tax returns is April 15th, which is less than 3 months away.
The house voted to end the shutdown, and the measure now goes to president trump’s desk.
Now, tonight at 6, we’re finding out if you can expect bigger refunds this year.
