MONSON, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- The family of a missing Monson teenager is thanking the community after 16-year-old Matteo was found safe Wednesday, following a search that spanned more than 24 hours and crossed into Connecticut.

Matteo was located just before 1 p.m. Wednesday, just over the border in Connecticut. The search and rescue operation involved 18 agencies across western Massachusetts and 150 rescue personnel.

The response extended beyond first responders. Hundreds of community members shared Matteo’s photo online to help spread the word. The volume of public offers to assist was significant enough that officials created a sign-up sheet for volunteers.

Matteo’s sister issued a statement Thursday expressing the family’s gratitude. “A huge thank you to everyone involved in Matteo’s search and rescue,” she said. “Even if you just helped by sharing the post around, I want you to know how incredibly grateful I am for all of you. These past days have been extremely hard on my family and I and is not something I wish upon anyone. Due to everyone’s efforts, Matteo was found and has made it home!”
