WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- Memorial Avenue repaving is officially underway, and city leaders say the first week is one for the books.

Officials acknowledge it’s been dusty, busy, and sometimes chaotic, but say that’s unavoidable with a project of this size, more than a decade in the making. The work is part of a full reconstruction of the corridor.

Once it’s done, the city says drivers and pedestrians will see a safer, more modern roadway and a stronger business environment along Memorial Avenue. Construction will continue through the summer.

Residents and businesses are being thanked for their patience as crews push through this final phase.
