Five fires in three weeks prompt smoking safety warning

AMHERST, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Amherst fire officials are warning about taking precautions while smoking.
They said, over the last three weeks, there have been at least five different fires caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials, including a now-uninhabitable apartment where smoking materials were disposed of on a wooded porch and two trash can fires, including one Thursday.
Another fire was at a house and another was at a college dorm, There were also two fire in neighboring towns, including one in a bedroom caused by a cigarette dropped on a carpet.
