SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- Central High School is hosting a court dedication ceremony in honor of their former basketball player, Travis Best.

Best led his team to an undefeated 25-0 season, along with a Division I State Championship in 1991.

Yet his career didn’t stop there, as the point guard weren’t on to play at Georgia Tech while surpassing 2,000 career points and 600 assists and multiple all ACC honors.

He then spent 10 years playing in the NBA with several teams including the Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks And New Jersey Nets. After, continued playing professionally overseas in Italy, Poland, and Russia.

An inspiration for many students at Central High School, Springfield Athletic Director Dwayne Early says, “For years, Central High has prided itself on a rich tradition of athletics and heart. By naming its basketball court after Travis Best, the district recognizes not only his extraordinary achievements on the court, but also the inspiration he continues to offer to our student-athletes citywide.”

The ceremony has been highly anticipated by many members of the Springfield community, including Mayor Domenic Sarno who said in part, “When mutual friends and the community reached out to me about naming the Central basketball court in Travis’ honor – it was a no brainer for me. Congrats, ‘Trav,’ and continued success both on and off the court.”

The ceremony starting at around 6:45 p.m. Monday night, followed by a 7:30 p.m. tip off as the Central Boys’ Varsity Basketball team takes on the Agawam Brownies.
