WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- Multiple car crashes on Park Street in West Springfield have residents concerned about safety.

Photos shared in a Facebook post showed recent accidents. Residents on Park Street said crashes there are practically a monthly occurrence and data is backing up what they have been saying for years.

Bill Hearn, a West Springfield resident who has lived on Park Street for 18 years, said crashes happen at least once a month, if not twice a month. “Oh, God. I would say at least once a month, if not twice a month. It’s crazy out here,” he noted.

A post to the West Springfield Community Forum showed two accidents happened back-to-back last week. Hearn said drivers are out of control. “And I get scared because my grandson lives here with me and this is his bus stop right over here. Cars don’t even stop for the bus,” Hearn added.

Hearn said cars blast through the stop light and treat the four-lane road like a highway. “Oh, yeah. When they get down to that, once that light turns green or if it’s getting ready to change, they just hammer down and they just come all guns blazing,” he explained.

West Springfield Police Sgt. Thomas Burke said the area of Park Street and Park Avenue is one of the town’s most heavily traveled areas and accounts for a total of four percent of combined crashes in the city. He added officers will continue to be as visible as possible to deter speeding and he said the department recognizes the danger it poses to residents of the area. “A single reckless driver is one too many,” Burke said in a statement.

MassDOT registered crash statistics back up the complaints from the public. The Mass. Impact Database shows roughly 61 accidents on Park Street and Park Avenue since January 2025.

Hearn and other residents said they do see patrol cars out, but it often does not seem to slow many down.
