Gas leak forces evacuations on Severn Street in Longmeadow
LONGMEADOW, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Repairs are underway after a gas leak prompted evacuations in Longmeadow.
Longmeadow Fire Chief John Rigney said firefighters were called to the area of 53 Severn Street around 8:30 a.m. Monday. When crews arrived, they found that an excavation crew working in the area hit a two-inch gas main was installing new utilities in the road.
While the gas main vented, five nearby residents were evacuated and a perimeter was established. Eversource crews arrived and were able to stop the leak around 9:20 a.m.
All residents have returned to their homes and Eversource will remain on-scene to repair the gas main and restore gas service to the 11 homes that were impacted.
