SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- Did you happen to see a quick flash in the sky on Saturday night? Well, you’re not alone.

Western Mass News is getting answers on the meteor shower that passed through our area.

“Like I just saw the flames and everything. And I was like, am I seeing things?

Many of you are probably having a similar reaction to Saturday night’s meteor as Springfield resident Fahad Tariq.

“Like I just saw the flames and everything. And I was like, am I seeing things?...Honestly, like I just looked up at the sky because I saw, like, a bright object and I’m not even kidding. It was just like a black wall, and it was just like on fire,” he tells us.

Tariq was driving near Bradley Road on his way to meet some friends when the meteor appeared.

He continues, “I did think I was like, uh, is this like a down satellite or something dangerous? That’s what I thought of initially. But then I was like, okay, like, but I’ve never seen like a meteor before in my life... Cause just cause like, I saw it with my own eyes and honestly, the videos don’t do it justice at all. But I saw the flames and it, it was, it was like, it was really, really cool.”

First Alert Meteorologist Liam Murphy says this was a Quadrantids meteor shower, which started on December 26th.

He explains this phenomenon to us, saying, “...what we saw was one of those meteors interacting with the atmosphere. And it kind of brings in that striking flash of light or that fireball look as the meteor kind of burns up in the atmosphere.”

Murphy then tells us that the meteor shower will continue through January 16, but peak activity will be between January 3rd and 4th.

“So, for us to see more of that, we would have to really have good viewing conditions, you know, want to be away from city lights. We need to have good weather at that point with clearer skies and things like that,” he continues.
