Ghost gun recovered from Springfield backyard, suspect arrested

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A Springfield man is facing several charges after a reported shooting Wednesday.
Officers responded to the 0-100 block of Moxon Street around 11:45 a.m. for a report of masked people in the area, according to Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh. They arrived to find three people running from Moxon Street to Healy Street then Montcalm Street and at least two of them reportedly appeared to be armed.
As police approached them, they located 20-year-old Ezier Santiago of Springfield and detained him. A K-9 and his handler arrived and the K-9 led officers to a backyard between Montcalm Street and Worcester Street where a ghost gun - loaded with 22 rounds, but capable of holding 32 rounds - was found.
Santiago was arrested on charges including carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded large capacity firearm without a license, improper storage of a large capacity firearm, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, and violation of a restraining order (failure to surrender a firearm).
Walsh added, later Wednesday, detectives were granted an arrest warrant against Santiago on charges of carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and malicious destruction of property more than $1,200. in connection with a Palmyra Street shooting. He explained officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation on July 5 and found evidence, as well as an occupied vehicle and a home that has been struck by bullets.
Both Wednesday’s incident and the Palmyra Street shooting remain under investigation.
