Gov. Healey unveils youth social media safety bill limiting screen time

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - The fight for safer social media continues as Governor Maura Healey proposed new legislation Tuesday to protect children from possible addiction.
The proposal is one of the most comprehensive for youth online safety in the nation. Users under age 18 will have default settings on social media platforms designed to curb social media addictions, including disabling algorithm-based feeds.
The bill will also restrict social media access overnight and during school hours, as well as limit use time to two hours a day.
Healey included the proposal in a supplemental budget filed Tuesday.
