Grants awarded to expand childhood access to locally-grown food

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - The Healey Administration has awarded $1.2 million in federally-funded grants to expand children’s access to locally-grown food in the Bay State.
Those funds are being awarded to 24 school districts and 10 early education and care programs. The money will go toward a number of different projects and programs, including school gardens, indoor hydroponic growing systems, culinary classes, and field trips to farms.
The goal is to also educate children on the food grown in their area, so the money will support professional development for nutrition professionals and educators, so they can enhance school meal offerings and bring food literacy into the classroom.
