Greenfield mourns death of former fire captain

GREENFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - The Greenfield community is mourning the loss of their former fire captain John D. Whitney.
Whitney first became a full-time firefighter in 2001 and served his community until he retirement in May 2026 after he was diagnosed with occupational cancer.
The former captain leaves behind his wife Emily and their three sons.
The Greenfield Fire Department said they will announce funeral plans as soon they have been finalized.
