Guest shot, suspect dead after vehicle crashes into Sturbridge hotel

STURBRIDGE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Officials have provided new details into a reported shooting at a Sturbridge hotel.
Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early said Sturbridge Police, along with Southbridge Police and State Police troopers assigned to the Sturbridge barracks, responded to the Sturbridge Plaza Hotel around 1 a.m. Thursday after a vehicle reportedly drove into the building and there were reports of shots fired into the hotel.
Emergency crews arrived on-scene and found a male guest suffering from an apparent gunshot wound in the hotel lobby. He was initially taken to Harrington Hospital, but was later flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center where he remained in critical, but stable, condition as of Thursday afternoon.
Early added that two officers and a trooper made contact with the female suspect, whom authorities believe was 28-years-old, and tried to talk to her. However, she fired her gun again and shot herself. He noted that “extensive” lifesaving measures were provided, during which emergency crews learned that she was approximately eight months pregnant, but she died from her injuries. Western Mass News has reached out to the D.A.’s office for information on the baby’s condition, but have not yet heard back.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect drove to the hotel to try and find two people who were known to the suspect. Also, investigators do not believe the victim found in the lobby was one of the people whom the suspect was seeking. The names of those involved have not been released.
The case remains under investigation.
