HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Holyoke Community College kicked off their Black History Month event series, where they look to highlight their theme of ‘A Century of Black History Commemorations,’ on Wednesday.

Campus events began with a discussion with co-founder of the nonprofit Academic Leadership Association of Greater Springfield, Vilenti Tulloch. He said he’s looking to help students and educators connect better to help close the educational achievement gap. “Just kind of sharing my experience, my role to kind of get where I’m at, and really helping future educators or future leaders in our community really, having a discussion about what’s needed, right? Like we need more educators of color in education, right? But also, how can we show up and be self-aware and so we can address those unconscious biases that are happening right now and, you know, those microaggressions that kids face every day. So I kind of want to share some ways, some tools, some tricks to kind of get, not tricks, but some ways to kind of counteract those things that serve as barriers for our kids and their success,” he explained.

HCC will be holding programming throughout the month to commemorate Black History Month. You can CLICK HERE to learn more about those upcoming events.
