(WGGB/WSHM) -- Following several instances of SNAP fraud within Massachusetts, the state is now securing EBT cards with chip and tap technology to help stop benefit theft. The Healey-Driscoll Administration says Massachusetts will be one of the first in the country to adopt the new cards for SNAP.

Retailers are being told now to update their checkout system with a pilot program set to begin later this year.

The new cards will use a microchip that creates a unique code for every transaction, making it much harder for criminals to steal card data with skimmers.
