Holyoke e-bike battery fire prompts statewide safety warning

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - The state’s Department of Fire Services is reminding people to take extra precautions after firefighters responded to two house fires involving batteries from e-bikes.
One of those fires happened at an apartment on Essex Street in Holyoke Thursday afternoon. Officials said the person inside had been charging his e-bike battery when he noticed it getting hit and begin to smoke. He put it in the kitchen sink, where it caught fire.
Everyone was able to get out safely and crews were able to contain the fire to that unit.
The fire in Holyoke came after after crews put out a similar fire across the state in Falmouth.
