Holyoke shooting victim identified as Easthampton man

HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Authorities have identified the victim of a deadly shooting in Holyoke.
Payton North, spokesperson for the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, said Holyoke Police were called to the area of 99 Suffolk Street around 9:30 p.m. last Wednesday for a ShotSpotter activation. When they arrived, officers found a man, identified Monday as 42-year-old Caleb Rodriguez of Easthampton, suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle near the intersection of Suffolk Street and Elm Street.
Police were able to get into the vehicle and started providing first aid before Rodriguez was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died.
North noted that a preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was sitting inside his vehicle when a fight involving several people broke out. “Evidence gathered during the investigation, including witness statements and surveillance footage, indicates the incident may have stemmed from an attempted robbery,” she said, adding that there is no known public safety threat.
The case remains under investigation by Holyoke Police, State Police detectives assigned to the D.A.’s office, and the D.A.’s murder unit.
