SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – More illegal off-highway vehicles have been taken off Springfield streets.

Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said officers saw a quad being driven along Franklin Street on Thursday. They conducted a traffic stop and seized the uninsured and uninsured vehicle. The rider, a 31-year-old Springfield man, will also be issued a criminal complaint.

Later that day, a dirt bike rider, who was reportedly not wearing a helmet, was seen on Maynard Street. The rider, identified as 25-year-old Dennis Flores-Velez of Springfield, was arrested and charged with operating an off-highway vehicle on a public way, operating a motorcycle without a helmet, operating an uninsured motor vehicle on a public way, and receiving a stolen motor vehicle. The dirt bike had been reported stolen out of Springfield.

A dirt bike rider was reportedly seen not wearing a helmet while riding along Ledyard Street on Friday, according to Walsh. A criminal complaint will be issued to the rider, a 26-year-old Springfield man, and the unregistered and uninsured mini-dirt bike was towed.

Also Friday, officers stopped two dirt bike riders on Harriet Street after they were seen being on Chapin Terrace. Two men, a 41-year-old and a 23-year-old both from Springfield, will be issued a criminal summons and both dirt bikes were unregistered and uninsured. Later that day, another dirt bike was seen on Carew Street. The bike was seized by police once the 39-year-old male rider, who will be issued a criminal summons, stopped.

A man and then a small child were seen driving a quad in Samuel Bolden Park. Police conducted a traffic stop and seized the Quad. The 24-year-old man rider will be issued a criminal summons.

Walsh explained these off-highway vehicle details continue will continue in an effort to deter “the illegal riding of dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles” on city streets. He added that such vehicles have led to “serious injuries and death to numerous riders.”
