Judge rules Agawam High softball team can play in WMass championship game

AGAWAM, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- A judge has ruled on whether the Agawam High School softball team can compete in the Western Mass. championship game after a paperwork mistake cost them their eligibility.
In a ruling filed Friday afternoon, Hampden Superior Court Justice Thomas Townsend said the the PVIAC “is hereby ordered to allow the Agawam High School softball team to participate in the Western Massachusetts Class A Softball Tournament championship game” against East Longmeadow High.
The issue began after the town said a school administrator failed to mark a final regular season game on their schedule with the MIAA.
Agawam coaches, parents, and Mayor Christopher Johnson attended a court hearing at Hampshire County Superior Court Friday morning. Johnson and the town’s law department filed an emergency injunction request Thursday that would allow the girls softball team to compete against East Longmeadow in the Western Mass. title game. The request came after the PVIAC Executive Board denied their appeal Wednesday.
PVIAC’s representative argued in court that the organization was following the rules laid out by MIAA.
The Agawam girls softball team defeated the Westfield Bombers 6-4 in Wednesday’s semifinal matchup.
Johnson was emotional talking about how the ordeal has impacted the team. “It’s made them stronger,” Johnson said. “I can’t imagine what those kids are going through.”
