Life-threatening cold drives western Massachusetts homeless to emergency shelters

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - The frigid temperatures could be deadly for hundreds of people in western Massachusetts, so local shelters are opening their doors and urging anyone without a home to come inside.
In Holyoke, Providence Ministries will have a warming shelter open again Friday night. They hold approximately 30 beds, which are first-come, first-serve. Registration begins at 5 p.m. at Kate’s Kitchen. They’re unsure if the warming shelter can open Saturday as city funding runs out after Friday.
However, Clinical and Support Options (CSO) said they have plenty of room at their Springfield and Northampton facilities. They’re open all day, every day and offer a warm place to stay and information about shelter and housing. Geoffrey Oldmixen, vice president of marketing and development for CSO, said staying outside could cost the unhoused their life and they are ready to welcome those in need. “So there’s no capacity there for coming in during the day and getting warm and then even at night with shelter, we’re working really hard to accommodate people. Don’t try to brave it, don’t worry whether there’s a bed. Come in, get warm, ask questions. We’ll help you out,” he explained.
One thing that sets CSO apart is that their Northampton shelter welcomes pets. That means people don’t have to choose between staying warm and keeping their furry friend safe. The organization also provides new coats and warm clothing. They rely on community donations to help keep everyone safe and warm.
Speaking of coats, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department is teaming up with local youth organizations Saturday for a cruiser care pack drive, donating winter supplies to unhoused residents across Massachusetts and Connecticut.
