CHICOPEE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- Powerball and Mega Millions are both sitting on jackpots of at least $600 million this weekend and lottery players in Western Massachusetts are taking notice.

The Powerball jackpot is currently estimated at $600 million, while Mega Millions stands at $743 million. If one person were to win both games, they could walk away a billionaire.

Shoppers streamed into the Pride Gas Station and Market on Montgomery Street in Chicopee, each hoping to grab a winning ticket. The store has a notable history. It sold a winning Powerball ticket worth $758.7 million to a woman in August 2017.

The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million. The odds of winning Mega Millions are 1 in 290 million.

Both Powerball and Mega Millions have not had simultaneous half-billion-dollar jackpots since March 2024, when Mega Millions reached an estimated $1.1 billion and Powerball stood at an estimated $800 million.

Springfield resident Darren Poole said he already bought tickets for both games. “I walked in a couple of days ago and said the same thing - ‘I’m going to win both’ - so I played both of them. It hasn’t happened yet, but we’ll see what happens,” he added.

If he wins, Poole said he has his eye on an upcoming Super Bowl and a cause close to his heart. “I work with a lot of autistic individuals, so something with that nature. Autistic individuals, both adults and kids. Some of that,” he noted.

Chicopee resident Donna Renaud said she only plays the lottery when the stakes are high. She bought tickets for both games and changed her usual strategy. “This time, I did a quick pick, but most of the time, I pick my grandchildren’s birthdays,” she explained.

Renaud noted she already has plans for the money if she wins. “I’d help my family (and) get them set, (including) my grandchildren (and) great grandchildren and, of course, myself. Take a cruise (to Alaska),” she said.

The next Mega Millions drawing is scheduled for Friday at 11 p.m. The Powerball drawing is scheduled for just before 11 p.m. Saturday.
