Man who called 911 on himself charged after crossbow standoff, police say

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A Springfield man is facing several charges after a nearly-hour long standoff with police.
Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said that officers were called to Parallel Street around 5:45 a.m. Thursday after someone called 911, stated “come and get me,” and hung up. When police arrived, they found 56-year-old Eric Tompkins of Springfield holding a crossbow, which he then allegedly pointed at several officers.
A perimeter was setup and authorities tried to de-escalate the situation. After approximately 40 minutes of trying to get Tompkins to drop the crossbow, he went back into the house. He then came back outside, unarmed, several minutes later.
Tompkins was arrested and charged with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. The crossbow was also recovered from inside the house.
