Man with prior gun convictions arrested in Springfield drug investigation

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A Springfield man, who has two previous gun-related convictions, has been arrested again following a drug investigation.
Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said members of the department’s firearms investigation unit had been investigating a “drug distribution operation” and 24-year-old Joshua Acevedo of Springfield as a possible suspect. Their investigation found that Acevedo reportedly had a gun and there was an active arrest warrant out for his arrest related to an alleged assault in May 2026.
On Thursday, police saw Acevedo leave his Canon Circle house and get into a vehicle. Investigators also learned that his driver’s license had been suspended. After parking along the 400 block of Cooley Street, officers approached and arrested him on the outstanding warrant.
A search of the vehicle reportedly led to the seizure of a loaded large capacity gun, another large capacity gun magazine, and marijuana. Detectives then applied for and were granted a search warrant for Acevedo’s house. That search reportedly led to the seizure of more ammunition, a third gun magazine, and $936 in cash.
Walsh added that Acevedo was convicted in 2022 in Franklin Superior Court on gun-related charges, as well as convicted in Hampden Superior Court in 2022 on firearm and drug charges.
In addition to an assault with a dangerous weapon charge associated with the arrest warrant, Acevedo has been charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded large capacity firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity feeding device or magazine, improper storage of a large capacity firearm, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, firearm violation with three prior violent or drug crimes, possession of ammunition without an FID card, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, possession with the intent to distribute a Class A drug, and failure to surrender firearm or ammunition.
