Man wounded in West Springfield parking lot shooting
WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – An investigation is underway after a man was shot in West Springfield store parking lot.
West Springfield Police said they responded to the parking lot of The Home Depot on Daggett Drive around 12:45 a.m. Saturday for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they saw several vehicles leaving what they said appeared to be “an impromptu car meet in the parking lot.”
Investigators located an unoccupied vehicle that had apparent bullet holes on the exterior fully engulfed in flames. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Agawam. Several shell casings were recovered from the scene and, at that time, no victims or witnesses were found.
A short time later, Springfield Police notified West Springfield Police that a 18-year-old man was at Baystate Medical Center, suffering from a gunshot wound. He reportedly told police that he had been shot in the Home Depot parking lot and was treated and released from the hospital.
We asked West Springfield Police Sgt. Thomas Burke if these types of car meet-ups have been an issue, but he said there have been fewer than five similar car meet-ups this spring and none of those turned violent.
The case remains under investigation by West Springfield Police and Mass. State Police.
