SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno says he’s disappointed, but not done fighting, after his long-sought bail reform bill was once again killed on Beacon Hill.

Mayor Sarno and State Representative Angelo Puppolo have been filing the bill since 2015. It would give prosecutors the right to appeal bail decisions made in district court; a power defense attorney already has for their clients.

Sarno, District Attorney Anthony Gulluni, and other supporters say it’s aimed at violent repeat offenders. They believe, are too often released with little or no bail, citing cases like Springfield officer, nestor santos, who was shot in the face and leg.

Sarno argues the bill wouldn’t strip any rights from defendants but would give DA’s another tool to keep dangerous offenders off the streets.
