Mercy Medical Center to join Baystate Health under new agreement

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Two of the region’s healthcare systems have agreed to join forces and integrate one system into the other.
In a statement released Tuesday, Baystate Health and Trinity Health Of New England said they have signed a “definitive agreement” to transition Mercy Medical Center, its affiliates, and medical groups into Baystate Health.
Trinity Health Of New England will still own and operate Brightside for Families and Children and continue to own continuing care services including Mercy LIFE, Mary’s Meadow at Providence Place, Beaven Kelly Home, and Saint Luke’s Home.
“This is an investment in both the past and the future of health care and economic development in western Massachusetts. Today, access forces too many patients to leave the region to seek care, and we need to ensure that care is compassionate, high quality, affordable, and local. We have been and will continue to be a pillar of our community – rooted here, serving here, and helping generations thrive here,” said Baystate Health President and CEO Peter Banko.
According to officials, Mercy Medical Center recently faced “faced significant challenges and financial pressures that threatened its long-term viability” and, despite efforts to improve financially, sustainability remained at risk because of inadequate reimbursement for care, industry-wide shifts including declining payment rates, patient preference changes toward outpatient care, and staffing shortages. After exploring potential “strategic partnerships and collaborations with other providers,” Mercy reportedly found that “Baystate Health shared its vision for the long-term sustainability of health care services in the community.”
“Our decision to transition Mercy to Baystate Health reflects our shared aim to ensuring that patients continue to have access to high-quality care. We are confident that Baystate Health will honor Mercy’s legacy and strengthen its ability to meet the evolving needs of the community,” said Trinity Health Of New England President and CEO Montez Carter.
The changes are subject to regulatory approvals. Both Baystate and Mercy indicated that they are committed to a “smooth and collaborative process” for employees, patients, and vendors. Until the necessary approvals are received and the transition is complete, Mercy Medical Center and Baystate Health will continue to operate as independent entities.
