MGM Springfield opens PlayWell center to promote responsible gambling

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- MGM Springfield has launched a new program designed to help gamblers stop before losing control.
The PlayWell program, overseen by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, serves as a resource to help keep gambling a form of entertainment instead of a way of life. “We want to make sure that anybody who feels that they have a problem with gaming, that they have a place to go to get help,” said Brad Hill, commissioner of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
The new hub at MGM Springfield casino is designed to save millions for gamblers through several programs. One feature is PlayMyWay, a first-in-the-nation program implemented in Massachusetts, which allows people to put a limit on how much they will gamble during the day. “They can put themselves on a voluntary seclusion list, which is important,” Hill explained. “They get put on the list. They can’t game in any of our casinos and they can’t game and make bets.”
Assistance is not limited to machines. Employees are standing by at the hub, ready to meet with visitors one-on-one to give personalized advice. PlayWell aims to help everyone leave the casino satisfied, not just those facing gambling problems. “A study done not too long ago said that these centers really need to be for everybody, not just those who are maybe suffering from problem and harms of some kind,” said Daniel Miller, compliance director at MGM Springfield. “And I think the new look at this center really does encourage everybody to come into it and avail themselves of what goes on here.”
The Commonwealth’s gambling problem hotline is available at 1-800-327-5050.
