MIT Professor shot and killed in his home

BROOKLINE, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- A professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was fatally shot at his home on Gibbs Street in Brookline around nine p.m. Monday night. He died Tuesday morning at the hospital, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.
47-year-old Nuno Loureiro was the Director of the University’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center and a faculty member in the Nuclear Science and Engineering Department at MIT.
Neighbors comment on his death saying that he had a nice, young family and lived at the residence for some time.
Police were seen investigating at his home late Monday night. One neighbor stating, “It was quiet. Taped off. No one said anything. Still to today still no idea if the shooter is at large.”
Police have not said if there’s a suspect or what led up to the shooting, but neighbors here have a lot of questions. One neighbor said, “Terrible. I mean I don’t know what happened or why it happened, it’s very scary. We’re living in such terrible times right now it seems like violence is just everywhere.”
Mass State Police and the Norfolk DA’s Office are investigating this as a homicide.
