ENFIELD, Conn. (WFSB) - An investigation is underway after a fire destroyed parts of a multi-family home in Enfield Sunday night.

It happened on Maple Avenue.

Neighbors told Channel 3 that they believe fireworks started the blaze. They said they noticed the fire appear in the back corner of the home. and that charred fireworks were visible at the scene.

Crews arrived to find flames billowing from the roof of the structure.

Several departments were involved, including Bradley International Airport firefighters, according to a Connecticut state firefighters union. They worked to extinguish the fire as flames and smoke filled the air.

David Carmona, who lives across the street, said he was inside his home when he began hearing fireworks before the fire broke out.

“They were shooting off fireworks in the street and we’re not talking little firecrackers. We’re talking canons,” Carmona said.

Neighbor Angela Cook said she also heard the fireworks.

“There was a ton of fireworks going off over there and I was pissed because that’s dangerous,” Cook said.

Cook said things went quiet outside before she began hearing something else.

“And then I hear people right here with their cars beeping and yelling ‘fire, fire.’ And people started beating on people’s doors to get people out,” Cook said.

Fire crews from several towns, including Bradley International Airport firefighters, according to a Connecticut state firefighters union, responded to and battled flames that spread to the roof of the structure.

“It was bad. And the whole third floor window was just red with flames,” Cook said.

As of Monday morning, significant damage was visible across the structure.

The roof was charred, multiple windows were blown out, and sections of guttering separated from the house. Debris was visible on the ground, the result of water used to fight the fire, which also displaced portions of the home’s siding.

A smoke alarm could still be heard inside the home as displaced residents returned to retrieve belongings. They declined to be interviewed on camera.

Cook said firefighters also worked to protect her home across the street.

“I thought my house was going up last night,” Cook said. “They were spraying my house with the hoses over and over and over again to try and keep it from being the next one to go up.”

Cook said her home was not damaged and that she is looking for ways to help her displaced neighbors.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
