New stop sign catches Springfield drivers off-guard

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- Drivers have been running a new stop sign in Springfield, and they probably have no idea. Western Mass News had our cameras rolling Monday morning, and caught videos of drivers going right past the sign on Parker and White Oak Street in Springfield’s Sixteen Acres neighborhood.
Chad Forbes has lived on that street for more than 50 years. He knows every car that passes, and lately, he’s been watching a lot of them run through a brand-new stop sign. “The person that was driving didn’t even realize it was there. I didn’t even know it was there until we had gone through it. And then all the cars behind us kept driving straight through it also,” he explains.
The sign went up just last week, and Springfield’s Department of Public Works Director Chris Cignoli tells us it was added as a trial after neighbors raised concerns about limited visibility and past accidents caused by thick bushes and trees at the intersection.
Cignoli also provided a statement, reading in part:
However, drivers who’ve had the right of way here for decades aren’t getting the message. Forbes says it’s happening almost every morning, “Nobody’s paying attention down there because it’s been like that in the 50-something years that I’ve lived here.”
The city says the sign is warranted and tells us they have not received any complaints. The real question now is, will the city act, before someone gets hurt.
