Northampton man gets prison sentence for child abuse material

NORTHAMPTON — A 35-year-old Northampton man was sentenced to three and a half years in the Hampshire County House of Corrections and five years of supervised probation after police found more than 3,000 child sexual abuse material (CSAM) images and videos and six improperly stored firearms in his home.
Adrian Cook was sentenced in Hampshire Superior Court after he pleaded guilty to three counts of possession of CSAM and six counts of improper storage of a firearm on June 11. As a result of these convictions, Cook is required to register as a sex offender.
Northampton police began investigating Cook after receiving information related to his “digital accounts,” according to Melissa Sippel, a spokesperson for the Northwestern district attorney’s office.
Police obtained and executed a search warrant to seize electronic devices at Cook’s home, at 1 Cooke Ave., where they found the videos and images, as well as the firearms.
According to a police report by Northampton Police Capt. Corey Robinson, investigators traced an IP address linked to Cook at his home after it was identified during a State Police investigation into peer-to-peer file-sharing programs used to distribute child sexual abuse material.
Upon executing the search warrant at Cook’s apartment, a family member told police that Cook was working at BJ’s Wholesale in Greenfield and pointed officers to Cook’s computer in the living room.
Reviewing Cook’s hard drive, Robinson said he discovered hundreds of thumbnails depicting child sexual abuse material, which Robinson described as being “mostly images of pre-pubescent aged children.”
Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Jimenez prosecuted the case with support from Family Service Advocate Sonia Serrazina. Jimenez recommended a three-year state prison sentence, while defense attorney Chrisiant Bracken sought probation with a suspended sentence of two and a half years in jail.
“We would like to recognize the significant investigative contributions of the Northampton Police Department, particularly Captain Corey Robinson, whose diligence and collaboration were instrumental in bringing this case to a successful resolution,” Jimenez remarked in a written statement.
Judge David Hodge sentenced Cook to two and a half years in the house of correction on one count and a consecutive one-year term on a second count.
Following his incarceration, Cook will serve five years of supervised probation, during which he must complete a sex offender evaluation and any recommended treatment; have no unsupervised contact with children under the age of 18; not reside with or have overnight visits involving minors; comply with all Sex Offender Registry Board requirements; submit to random searches of all digital devices; and forfeit all electronics and firearms seized in connection with the investigation.
“The possession of child sexual abuse material is not a victimless crime,” Jimenez wrote. “Every image and video documents the abuse of a child, and the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office remains committed to investigating these crimes, holding offenders accountable, and protecting children from exploitation.”
