Northampton Police, Animal Control search for possibly rabid cat

NORTHAMPTON, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Officials in one Hampshire County community are warning of a possibly rabid cat.
Northampton’s Department of Health and Human Services said a cat was seen acting abnormally on State Street, Bright Avenue, Trumbull Road, Tyler Court, and heading towards Henshaw Avenue around 8 p.m. Thursday. The cat was also showing symptoms consistent with having rabies.
Animal control officers and Northampton Police have been unable to capture the cat, but they are continuing to look for it. The cat is described as a medium-sized, short hair, brown tabby with a solid black tail tip and a small white area around the tip of its mouth.
Anyone who may see the cat is urged not to approach or try and capture it and instead, call Northampton Public Safety at (413) 587-1100.
Officials noted that any person or animal that may have been exposed to the cat’s saliva through a bite, scratch, fresh wound, feeding, or saliva contact with eyes or mouth may have been exposed to rabies. If you or anyone you know may have had contact with the cat on or after April 16, you are urged to call the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, 24 hours a day, at (617) 983-6800.
