Officer injured during Springfield dirt bike enforcement detail

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – More off-highway vehicles have been taken off Springfield streets.
Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said officers were working an anti-off-highway vehicle detail on Friday when they saw a girl riding a quad in the area of Newbury Street. Once she stopped on the 100 block of Littleton Street, police approached the quad and the girl and issued a criminal complaint. Her name and specific charges cannot be released because of her age.
Later, police found a dirt bike rider on the area of Eastern Avenue. Officers were able to follow the bike to Massachusetts Avenue, where it blew a tire. The rider, 21-year-old Jerome Jackson of Springfield, fell off and, as police approached, he tried to get back onto the dirt bike and struck an officer with the bike “as he pulled a wheelie,” Walsh explained. The officer received medical attention at the scene.
Jackson was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, unregistered motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, and operating a snow or recreational vehicle on a public way.
During the same detail, officers also saw a dirt bike rider, 21-year-old Ian Rosado of Springfield, on Marble Street. He allegedly tried to get back on the bike, but police were able to stop him and he was placed under arrest on charges including operating a snow or recreational vehicle on a public way, uninsured motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and resisting arrest. The dirt bike was also seized.
Walsh noted that Springfield Police will continue to conduct the details in efforts of deterring “the illegal riding of dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles” on city streets. He added that the vehicles have “led to serious injuries and death to numerous riders” and “some riders are also known to drive recklessly, putting pedestrians and other vehicular traffic in danger.”
