SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - The plowing and clearing of over a foot of snow has created large piles, many of which may be covering fire hydrants. Now, officials are urging residents to clear out nearby hydrants while outside.

Fire departments across western Massachusetts took to social media Monday morning to tell the public that snow should be cleared at least three feet in all directions around the hydrant. In addition, residents are asked to ensure that there is a clear path from the street to the hydrant. “During an emergency, every second counts. Keeping fire hydrants accessible helps keep Chicopee safe,“ said Chicopee fire officials on social media.

MEMA and the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services also noted that residents should clear snow from around home exhaust vents for items including fireplaces, furnaces, and boilers because carbon monoxide levels could rise in the home if they are blocked by snow. They also urged residents to make sure that there are working smoke detectors on every level of the home.
