Officials investigating officer-involved shooting in Adams

ADAMS, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – An investigation is underway after an officer-involved shooting in Berkshire County.
Julia Sabourin, spokesperson for the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office, said that Adams Police responded to 31 Commercial Street around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday after a caller, believed to be 25-year-old Phillip White of Adams, reported that his friend had been stabbed and that there was blood everywhere. When they arrived, they found that White appeared to have sharp force injuries, which were later determined to be self-inflicted, and he approached an officer in “in a threatening manor with an object in his hand,” she added.
The officer fired his gun, but the bullet did not hit White or anyone else. White was taken into custody a short time later.
Sabourin noted that State Police were notified around 9:15 p.m. of an officer-involved shooting and State Police detectives assigned to the D.A.’s office responded to the scene. When they arrived, they found blood around a sidewalk, entryway, and inside the residence. “At this time, early evidence suggests that Mr. White both called 911 and inflicted the injuries upon himself. At this stage in the investigation, it is not believed that there was a ‘friend’ involved in the incident and that Mr. White acted alone,” she said.
The officer who discharged his weapon is on paid administrative leave from the Adams Police Department.
White was taken to Berkshire Medical Center, where he is in stable physical condition and undergoing a mental health evaluation. There are three outstanding warrants out against White and his arraignment was expected Wednesday afternoon.
An investigation into the incident - which will include witness and police interviews, body worn camera video, and a ballistics analysis – remains ongoing by State Police detectives assigned to the D.A.’s office.
