Officials warn of shark activity after seal found dead on Martha’s Vineyard

MARTHA’S VINEYARD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Before you head out to the beach for Memorial Day weekend, the New England Aquarium has issued a warning to stay vigilant after reports of the first shark sighting of the season.
On Sunday, a dead gray seal was found on Lucy Vincent Beach on Martha’s Vineyard with a large bite wound matching that of a shark. One of aquarium’s scientists said in a statement, “this is just the beginning of white shark season...Their numbers will continue to increase throughout the summer with peak activity in the fall.”
If you would like to stay informed on shark activity or report a sighting, you can check out the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s app, Sharktivity.
