FEEDING HILLS, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- A lightning strike damaged a home on Anvil Street in Feeding Hills during overnight storms, forcing the homeowner out and leaving a visible hole in the roof.

Crews spent the day Friday cleaning up debris inside and outside the house at 125 Anvil Street. No one was injured.

Chris Longo, owner of Longo Carpet Cleaning, lives three houses away from the damaged home. He said the strike sounded like an explosion. “I thought it was an explosion, that we were being attacked. I shot out of bed and, within minutes, the police and fire departments were here,” he added.

The lightning bolt caused significant external and internal damage to the house. The homeowner escaped injury after quickly getting out of bed. “Her whole ceiling fell down and she had two feet of insulation on her bed with her whole ceiling on her bed. We found that this morning when we went up there,” he explained.

Around 80 percent of the inner ceiling on the second level came down, according to Longo. He and his company filled several trash bags with insulation. Parts of the outer roof were seen hanging from the house and down on the driveway and front yard.

Western Mass News First Alert Meteorologist Janna Brown, who lives five minutes away from the affected house, said she was stunned by what happened. “The intensity of it was actually a little bit surprising to me and it was probably one of the louder storms I’ve heard in quite a few years actually,” she added.

Brown noted this week’s warm and dry weather has played a significant role in the pop-up showers. “Usually, when we get that kind of pattern, we’ll be dealing with thunderstorm chances, you know? That’s what we tend to see in July and August and it was very much a week like that and just the current setup the way things were, we’ve been dealing with these rounds of storms that keep coming through at night,” she explained.

Brown advised people to be prepared for thunderstorms, especially when it comes to the possibility of lightning strikes.

Longo said there is a long way to go when it comes to helping his friends out. “The roof panels, the structure, the insulation, the roofing material, the sheetrock on the inside, a lot of electrical has to be replaced, the floors have to be done, the house has to be cleaned. There’s a lot to do,” he said.

Longo estimates it will take months before repairs are complete and for the homeowner to go back inside. The repairs may cost tens of thousands of dollars.
