Police arrest Springfield man with loaded gun after foot chase

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A Springfield man is under arrest and an illegal gun has been seized after an investigation.
Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said members of the department’s firearms investigation unit had been investigating 23-year-old Navon Kelly of Springfield for alleged illegal possession of a firearm. On Tuesday, authorities received information that Kelly was reportedly in possession of a firearm drum magazine and an illegal gun.
Detectives located Kelly on the 0-100 block of Newland Street late Tuesday night, but he allegedly started to run away as police tried to detain him. He was taken into custody after a short foot chase. A loaded gun with a 50 round drum magazine and 18 bags of marijuana were seized from Kelly’s backpack.
Kelly was arrested and charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded large capacity firearm on a public way, and possession with the intent to distribute a Class D drug.
