SUNDERLAND, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Drivers through one part of Hampshire County should expect delays as authorities work to wrangle several cows following a crash.

MassDOT told Western Mass News that Route 116 in Sunderland is closed in both directions, in the area of 716 Amherst Road, because of a crash that occurred early Thursday morning. Sources at the scene added that 11 people were injured in the crash and the extent of their injuries is unknown.

Police added that the road closure is also, in part, due to efforts to wrangle several cows that escaped as a result of the crash. We’re told that one cow has died and 19 cows are still on the loose.

MassDOT noted that the road closure is expected to remain in place for several hours, so drivers are being advised to seek alternate routes or avoid the area if possible.
