NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Thousands will pack downtown Northampton Wednesday night for the city’s First Night celebration, and police are urging revelers to plan ahead to stay safe.

Police Captain Corey Robinson, who has worked more than 20 New Year’s Eves in Northampton, said the biggest threat to celebrants isn’t what many might expect.

“If you’re gonna consume alcohol, do it safely. Do it responsibly. You know, have a plan on getting home. Where people run into problems is that they don’t have a plan. And if, you know, they get stuck and they get behind that wheel, and something tragic happens. So, again, be responsible,” Robinson said.

The celebration kicks off at noon on New Year’s Eve with music, dance and performances across dozens of downtown venues. Visitors of all ages pack the streets for the massive event.

“We monitor traffic, we monitor the crowds, and suspicious activity. Our goal is that everyone has a safe night and an enjoyable night,” Robinson said.

Police want attendees to stay alert, watch their surroundings and report anything suspicious. Officers will be visible throughout downtown during the celebration.

Robinson advised people to have fun but have a plan, warning that without one, celebrants could start 2026 under arrest or worse.

For those who find themselves without a safe way home, Robinson said police can help.

“As a last-ditch effort, call us. We’ll make a phone call for you. Or at least we’ll give you a place to stay for the night. You may not be comfortable, but you will be alive when you wake up in the morning,” Robinson said.

Northampton police will shut down King Street from the Hotel Northampton to Main Street around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night. The street will stay closed until crowds clear out.

Robinson will be working Wednesday night, watching over the thousands of attendees. His hope is that everyone who comes downtown makes it home safely.
