NORTHAMPTON — A man believed to be 36-year-old Jonathon Maxwell was found dead along the shoreline of the Connecticut River Tuesday afternoon three days after he was reported missing.

First responders were dispatched to the area of Shepherds Island and Middle Meadow Road at 3 p.m. Tuesday following a report a body found along the river’s shoreline, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office. Upon arrival, emergency personnel used a boat to access the area and recover Maxwell, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Maxwell, of Connecticut, was reported missing and last seen in Northampton on Saturday, July 11, prompting a nearly three-day search that included helicopters, a dive team and rescue dogs.

Northampton Police found Maxwell’s cellphone and car less than two days after his sister contacted the department at about 9 p.m. Friday, informing officers she had used the “Find My Phone” feature to locate her brother in Northampton, Capt. Corey Robinson said in an interview Monday morning.

Robinson said officers spent several hours unsuccessfully looking for Maxwell that night. He said Monday that officers found Maxwell’s car after someone passing through the area reported a blue Subaru matching his vehicle stuck in the mud on 1st Square Road. Officers later found his cellphone in a nearby cornfield.

Easthampton Police’s K-9 Unit assisted with the search Saturday night, while Northampton Fire searched the river alongside the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing and the State Environmental Police on Sunday.

Although the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has yet to confirm the identity of the individual, the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office wrote in a statement that the deceased is believed to be Maxwell.

While the DA’s Office reported that there has been no report of foul play in this case, the OCME will determine the official cause of death.

This case remains under active investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit State Police Crime Scene Services Section and the Northampton Police Department.

Several local agencies assisted with the recovery, including the Massachusetts Environmental Police, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, the Western Massachusetts Regional Dive Team and the Westfield Fire Department.
