WESTFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Authorities are investigating reports of shots fired during a training exercise at Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield.

Westfield Police Capt. Eric Hall said that active attack training was underway at the base Thursday morning when there was a report of one or more shots being fired around 9:45 a.m.

Investigators are now working to clear buildings to ensure there is no active threat and Hall noted that whether the reported shots were part of the training or something else remains under investigation.

Westfield Police, as well as other agencies, remain on-scene.
