Springfield College celebrates 12th men’s volleyball national championship

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Springfield College is celebrating after the men’s volleyball team won the national championship Saturday at home inside Blake Arena.
The Pride defeated the Carthage College Firebirds in straight sets on their home court in front of a capacity crowd. It was the college’s 12th national title since 1997 and their sixth since the NCAA established a Division III championship in 2012.
“It’s all coach’s game plans. His scouts were unbelievable and really just going out there and trying to execute as best as we can,” said Brennan Cutter, junior middle blocker.
The Pride redeemed last season’s championship defeat to Southern Virginia and shared the moment with the student body and the city of Springfield.
“Small percentage of coaches actually get to coach in that environment,” said head coach Charlie Sullivan. “You know, it was kind of difficult to take it all in because the goal of the day was to stay emotionless and just kind of focus on what we need to do and not get too overworked with emotions. But I did get a couple of peeks around at moments here and there, and it was just sensational.”
With the victory, the Pride sent off their eight seniors in style. Coach Sullivan is already hitting the recruiting trail in preparation for next season. “Recruiting is just like breathing. You can stop anytime you want to. It’s just not a good idea,” he explained.
