SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Friday marks the last day for BJ Calvi as Springfield’s fire commissioner.

Calvi announced earlier this month that he was retiring effective July 24 after serving as commissioner since 2018. He began his career 31 years ago with the Agawam Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of deputy chief in 2012.

In a social media post Friday, fire officials thanked Calvi for his service and noted that he “led with integrity, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to the safety and success of every member of this department.” They added that his “vision and dedication have strengthened our department and helped prepare us to meet the challenges of today while building for the future.”

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno previously announced that Deputy Chief Miguel “Mike” Rivera will take over as fire commissioner. Rivera, a city native, has been with the department 17 years and will be the first Latino in the role.
