Springfield Police arrest two hiding in basement after shooting investigation

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A shooting incident in Springfield led to the arrest of two suspects on unrelated charges.

Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said that officers were called for a reported shooting victim in the area of Main Street and Union Street around 4 p.m. Tuesday.  When they arrived, they found a juvenile male victim on the 100 block of William Street, who was taken to Baystate Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe that the incident started with a fight and the shooting occurred near the intersection of Main Street and Winthrop Street.  They also received information that people fled the scene and ran into an Acushnet Avenue home.

Walsh added that members of the department’s Emergency Services Unit arrived and were granted permission to search the multi-family home.  Two suspects who did not live in the home, identified as 21-year-old Roberto Mercado of Holyoke and 24-year-old Christopher Cruz of Springfield, were reportedly found in the basement.

Mercado and Cruz were both was arrested on charges of breaking and entering and trespassing, while Cruz reportedly had two outstanding warrants on charges including assault and battery on a household or family member, assault and battery, malicious destruction of property, malicious damage to a motor vehicle, and receiving a stolen motor vehicle.

Walsh noted that neither Mercado or Cruz have been charged in connection with the shooting and the case remains under investigation.
