SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - A Springfield police officer has been put on paid administrative leave after shooting a man with a knife in Indian Orchard Saturday afternoon.

Police responded to Worcester Street shortly 4:30 p.m. after learning a man with a knife displaying what they called “psychiatric behavior.” An officer did end up shooting that man, though it’s unclear what led up to that action.

Crews immediately stepped in with medical aid, but he died on scene.

It’s standard procedure to put the involved officer on paid administrative leave. The Springfield Police Department is now looking into what happened and if the use of force was necessary.

Payton North, spokesperson for the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, said that their office will “review the investigation and issue findings and conclusions regarding the use of force and the circumstances of the death” and she added that “these materials will be made public when complete and finalized.”
