SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Officials continue efforts to crackdown on off-highway vehicles on Springfield streets.

On Saturday, Springfield Police conducted an enforcement detail on Saturday, according to Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh. He added that the details are aimed at deterring the illegal use of dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles because they are illegal on city streets and have led to serious injuries and deaths. “These riders are also known to drive recklessly putting pedestrians and other vehicular traffic in danger,” he explained.

As part of Saturday’s operation, one citation was issued to a dirt bike rider who failed to stop or yield near the intersection of Carew Street and Penacook Street. Another citation was issued after a dirt bike was stopped along the 600 block of Carew Street and, in that case, the rider will receive a criminal complaint and the bike was towed.

Walsh added that three riders were stopped on the 100 block of Moreland Street and three criminal complaints and three citations were issued and all three off-highway-vehicles were towed away.
