Springfield police warn road safety for both drivers and pedestrians

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- Two women were hospitalized after being hit by cars in Springfield in less than a week, both just feet from crosswalks. Now, local police are reminding both drivers and pedestrians to remember the rules of the road.
As the investigation continues, Springfield police are giving tips to make sure you are safe, both behind the wheel and while walking.
Just after 5:00 on Monday, a woman was struck by a vehicle while trying to walk across Maple Street. On Thursday, a car hit a woman trying to cross Page Boulevard.
Both pedestrians were seriously injured; the drivers involved remained at the scenes, and the incidents happened just feet away from crosswalks.
Public Information Officer for the Springfield Police Department Ryan Walsh tells Western Mass News road safety is a two-way street. Both drivers and pedestrians need to understand and follow the rules of the road.
“We need pedestrians to be vigilant, and we need drivers to be vigilant...We need drivers to be aware there might be pedestrians in the road at any time, so keep your eyes on the road. And we need pedestrians to follow the rules of the road and be extensively defensive when you’re crossing the street and only do so at crosswalks,” he explains.
Walsh also tells us that if you’re involved, do not leave the scene, and instead, “Call 911 right away. Our officers will be there. If you’re legally licensed and registered and not intoxicated, the investigation goes on from there. If you take off and flee the scene, that’s a hit-and-run and that is an arrestable offense right there.”
For pedestrians, Walsh says using crosswalks is not the only way to stay safe. They can also wear light-colored clothing and be defensive by making contact with any drivers who may be at a stoplight or stop sign. This is to ensure they stop so you can walk across.
In the end, the key takeaway for everyone at this moment: pay attention.
Walsh continued, “That’s going to avoid 95+% of accidents. So, if drivers keep their eyes on the road and pedestrians follow the rules of the road, it’s going to be a much safer way to travel through our city.”
We asked Springfield police if pedestrian crashes are on the rise in the city, but they could not provide that data. We were also unable to speak with neighbors in this area.
Both incidents remain under investigation at this time.
