Springfield traffic stop yields machine gun, five arrests

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Five people are facing charges after Springfield Police conducted a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle.
Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said officers saw a vehicle, which had been reported stolen on Saturday, on Marion Street around 1:25 p.m. Monday. They then saw five people, three of whom were trying to pull off the license plate, outside the vehicle on Amherst Street. One person was also reportedly seen carrying what police believed was a gun in a sweatshirt pocket.
As officers conducted a traffic stop, the five people got back into the vehicle and sped away. A short time later, the vehicle was spotted near Franklin Street and the five suspects ran away. One suspect, 18-year-old Xavier Gonzalez of Holyoke, allegedly tried to run away while carrying what appeared to be a gun, while the other suspects were detained.
Gonzalez was taken into custody and police recovered a gun loaded with 24 rounds of ammunition and had a sear-selector switch, which made it a fully automatic machine gun.
Gonzalez, 19-year-old Neashawn Lopez of Holyoke, 23-year-old Aiden Laboy of Holyoke, a 17-year-old boy, and 15-year-old boy were placed under arrest. Gonzalez, Lopez, and Laboy are all facing a charge of receiving a stolen vehicle, while Gonzalez is facing additional gun-related charges. Because of their ages, the names and charges against the two boys will not be released.
